Shafi, with Ben-Or, Kilian and Wigderson, showed [9] that two provers are sufficient, and that all of NP can be proven with zero knowledge in this model without any assumptions.

Specifically, they showed that if the size of a maximum clique in a graph can be approximated within a constant factor, then all of NP can be accepted in nearly polynomial time. This result inspired decades of results about PCPs (probabilistically checkable proofs, an alternative characterization of multi-prover proofs) and hardness of approximation. This paper earned Shafi her second Gödel Prize, shared with two papers that prove nearly optimal parameters for PCPs. One of the most important contributors to this area is Johan Håstad, who years earlier had been the very first of Shafi's many amazing graduate students.

Sharing the Gödel Prize was a paper by László Babai and Shlomo Moran that gave a different notion of interactive proof, where the randomness of the verifier is only from public coins. An example in Shafi's paper on zero knowledge clearly seemed to require private coins, but Shafi and Michael Sipser [7] later proved that the two notions are equivalent. This involved using public coins to do interactive proofs showing lower bounds on the sizes of sets.

Shafi Goldwasser has made fundamental contributions to cryptography, computational complexity, computational number theory and probabilistic algorithms. Turing Award for pioneering a systematic, quantitative approach to the design and evaluation of computer architectures with enduring impact on the microprocessor industry.
In their example, encryption security was provably based on a quadratic residuosity assumption. They were the first to give a rigorous definition of semantic security for a public-key encryption system, and showed that it was equivalent to a number of other intuitive formulations of security. Julius Caesar may have used cryptography, but now we were finally beginning to understand it.
ACM () is widely recognized as the premier organization for computing professionals, delivering a broad array of resources that advance the computing and IT disciplines, enable professional development, and promote policies and research that benefit society. Another recent area of research [17] is protection against “side-channel attacks”, where an adversary is able to get information (for example, by measuring processor power consumption) that is not part of the stream of bits specified by a protocol. Shafi, with Adi Akavia and Vaikuntanathan, had the first results showing how to do public-key encryption in a way that remains secure even if the secret memory containing the secret key is partially leaked. This was the beginning of an intensive research effort by the cryptographic community to define and achieve leakage resilience for cryptographic primitives and protocols. For example, with Tauman Kalai and Rothblum she proposed [16] the model of "one-time program" which obfuscates a program so that it can be executed only for a prescribed number of executions, assuming a special kind of universal secure hardware.

This October, the 13th — and sadly, the final — installment in the classic Halloween franchise will be released, and we’re hoping to revisit the Myers home one last time. The Century House (as the iconic Halloween filming location has also been known), is now South Pasadena Cultural Landmark No. 34. Luckily, fans and historians rallied against this decision and the home was simply moved to a new location at 1000 Mission Street, where it still stands today. The house was originally located at 709 Meridian Avenue, and it was set to be bulldozed in 1987 to make way for a hospital.
In the Autumn of 1978, an adult Michael Myers returned to Haddonfield and briefly took up residence inside the derelict house. Also, Tommy Doyle told Laurie that the old Myers house was haunted and that Lonnie Elam told him that awful stuff happened there once. However, Dan then suggested that they go upstairs to have sex, which distracted Judith from her babysitting duty. After Michael saw the two teens go upstairs and the light turns off in Judith's bedroom, he walked through the back door and got a butcher knife from a kitchen drawer. Judith was in the midst of brushing her hair while sitting in front of her vanity and noticed Michael standing behind her when she saw his reflection in the mirror. It was not until she turned around that Michael stabbed her in the chest, torso, and abdomen.

Every town has a haunted house…That's exactly what the filmmakers found when searching for locations for John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN ...a simple old dilapidated Victorian house standing in stark contrast to the tidy suburban homes of South Pasadena, California. While they wanted the house to look spooky, it couldn’t look abandoned, as this was supposed to be the Myers family home, so the production team got to work.
The fictional town in the Halloween movies took its name from Haddonfield, New Jersey, where producer and screenwriter Debra Hill was born. Some would even argue this is the true Halloween movie house, as it is where the finale occurs. Those who have watched the original Halloween movie will know that the Michael Myers house is not the only Halloween movie house worth mentioning. So, the next time you watch "Halloween," remember that house is actually out there — but probably not to truly haunt your dreams.
The building is now home to Westland Financial Services (so there’s still some bloodletting happening here), but they don’t seem to appreciate the building’s horror pedigree — a small sign on the front door explicitly forbids trespassing. After being used in the Halloween film, the house remained vacant and became increasingly dilapidated until it was eventually was slated to be bulldozed in 1987 — only to be saved from destruction at the last moment. When Halloween was filmed in the late 1970s, the house had already long been abandoned. The rumors say the building was in such bad shape that the film crew had to do a little work to make the facade presentable — even as a spooky house.
The case is remembered for being the most shocking, gruesome, unconscionable, unusual, and unnatural murder even despite the fact it was a familial killing. Haddonfield and deaths on Halloween have transformed public perception of Haddonfield as the Halloween Capital of the World even more so than the Celtic Islands; the origin of the celebration of Samhain - the precursor to All Hallow's Eve or Halloween. Because of the now overwhelming widespread knowledge about the infamous serial killer Michael Myers, Haddonfield and Halloween have become synonymous. For instance, the home has the living room to the left of the front door, but in the movie characters turn to the right to enter the living room. Also in the film, the doorknob to the front door is on the right hand side of both the exterior and the interior sides of the door. While 707 Meridian Avenue was the original address for Michael Myers’ home, it has since moved to the corner of Meridian Avenue and Mission Street at 1000 Mission Street.
After filming at the property ended in 1978, the house at 709 Meridian Avenue was abandoned again. It was then set to be demolished in 1987, along with many other nearby properties. However, it was saved by a South Pasadena council member, David Margrave, who purchased the property for next to nothing. Lifelong horror fans like Jonathan Wiseman make the pilgrimage just to see something so fantastically scary in real life. Coincidentally, Nichol’s Hardware Store, where Michael Myers shoplifted the iconic mask and other tools of his grim trade, can be found across the street (at 966 Mission) from the Century House.
It would have been extremely hard, if not impossible, to recreate the suburban Midwest feel of Haddonfield, simply because of stringent building codes and neighborhood restrictions now in place. As far as the interior décor, there was no way Kenny was going to replicate the rundown and outdated 70s look with the run-down flooring, appliances, and furniture made famous in the movie! The film is set in Haddonfield, Illinois, a fictional Midwestern town that is actually an ode to co-wroter, Debra Hill’s hometown of Haddonfield, NJ. In reality the original location of Michael Myers home was in a residential area of South Pasadena, California at 707 Meridian Avenue. You see the production was extremely low budget and the entire film was shot for $300,000 so the director, John Carpenter, stayed as close to home as possible to save on costs.
